Session 1: Baseline

Training Room 3B. Wednesday 5 August 2026, 14:00

Carol BeddoesIs it recording? Little red light. Right. Good afternoon.

Multiple speakersAfternoon.

Carol BeddoesHousekeeping. Clothes folded in the lockers by the door, not on the floor, Amira. Fire exits behind you. If there's a drill you go out as you are, naked, and line up in the car park. Facilities have seen it all before. Water on the side. Lube station by the window.

Carol BeddoesLet me be clear about what this module is and isn't. It isn't camp. You all did camp. You've all had three years of university CCD, and you've all got a transcript that says you were competent when you left. This module takes you from competent to the standard this firm expects of a woman with its name on her collar. Six weeks. Home practice every day, logged. A supervised session in week five. Practical assessment in week six, with two of the partners. Clear?

Multiple speakersYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesToday is a baseline. I want to see where you actually are, not where your transcript says you are. Benches. Bara. Trainers are on the tray beside you, one to four. Prepare yourselves and go to the largest you can take comfortably. Comfortably. I'm not interested in heroics.

Hannah AshworthIs the baseline scored?

Carol BeddoesEverything's scored, Hannah. Knees apart.

[Movement. Bench creaks.]

Carol BeddoesBeth, knees back towards me. You're holding yourself up with your neck. Weight in your knees and your chest. Amira, your shoulders are round your ears.

Amira RahmanThey live there.

Carol BeddoesThen evict them. Go.

[Pump bottle, several times. Silence.]

Carol BeddoesNumbers.

Hannah AshworthFour.

Beth CareyFour.

Amira RahmanThree. Four's in its box, looking at me.

Carol BeddoesThree's fine for a baseline. Beth, four, and no surprise. Your file says you've asked for anal at every fulfilment session since you joined.

Beth CareyYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesEvery one.

Beth CareyIt's my favourite.

Amira RahmanLook at her. She's glowing.

Carol BeddoesThen you've got nothing to prove in this module, Beth, so don't try to. Chloe?

[Pause]

Carol BeddoesChloe.

Chloe DunmoreI'm still on one.

Carol BeddoesStill on, or still trying?

Chloe DunmoreTrying.

[Footsteps]

Carol BeddoesPut it down. Hands behind you. When did you last do this?

Chloe DunmoreAt uni.

Carol BeddoesWhen at uni?

Chloe DunmoreSecond year? Maybe the start of third. It was finals, and my sessions kept getting moved, and I thought I'd just...

Carol BeddoesYou thought you'd pick it up again after.

Chloe DunmoreYes.

Carol BeddoesAnd did you?

Chloe DunmoreNo, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesNo. Eighteen months. You've let eighteen months of camp and university training go because nobody was checking. Your body doesn't care about your finals, Chloe. It forgets.

Chloe DunmoreI'm sorry.

Carol BeddoesI don't need you sorry. I need you breathing. You're holding your breath right now, I can see your back. Breathe out.

[Chloe Dunmore: exhalation]

Carol BeddoesAgain. Into my hand. In. Out. Now pick it up, and do it on the out.

[Pause]

Chloe DunmoreOh.

Carol BeddoesThere. That's one. That's camp week two. Leave it in.

Carol BeddoesHome practice, all of you. Once a day. Logged. Honestly. I read the logs.

Amira RahmanDoes anyone ever lie on them?

Carol BeddoesEvery cohort. I always know.

Transcript continues. Posture and breath work, 00:06:00 to 00:52:00, omitted from this excerpt.

Carol BeddoesThat's all for today. Trainers out, washed and back in your bags. Not you, Chloe. Stay behind, please.

[Movement. Door opens and closes. Multiple speakers, receding.]

Carol BeddoesSit down.

Chloe DunmoreMrs Beddoes, I'm really sorry, I know it's...

Carol BeddoesI know you are. Listen. You're not doing once a day like the others. That one stays in. From now, you wear it at work. In when you arrive, out when you leave, all day, every day, until you're up to standard.

Chloe DunmoreAt work?

Carol BeddoesAt work.

Chloe DunmoreAt my desk? In meetings?

Carol BeddoesAt your desk, in meetings, in the lift, in the queue at Pret. Nobody will know unless you make a face. So don't make a face.

Chloe DunmoreAnd how will you... sorry. How will anyone know I'm...

Carol BeddoesI'm going to ask Mr Whitfield to check.

[Pause]

Chloe DunmoreMr Whitfield.

Carol BeddoesHe's your line manager. He's responsible for your development. I'll ask him to check regularly, at random, and to let me know.

Chloe DunmoreCheck how?

Carol BeddoesChloe.

Chloe DunmoreSorry. Yes. Of course. Sorry. I just, I sit right outside his office.

Carol BeddoesThen it won't take him long, will it. Up a size when you're comfortable, and you log it. I want to see four by week five.

Chloe DunmoreYes, Mrs Beddoes. I'm sorry. I really am. I should have kept it up.

Carol BeddoesYou should. Now you will. Off you go. Is this thing still recording?

Session 3: Progress Review

Training Room 3B. Wednesday 19 August 2026, 14:00

Carol BeddoesLogs on the table. Then Bara, trainers in, at whatever you've logged as your current size. Go.

[Paper. Movement. Pump bottle.]

Carol BeddoesHannah. Four, every day, fourteen days, and a note on day nine that says "tried a five from home, fine." We don't have a five.

Hannah AshworthI bought one.

Carol BeddoesYou bought one.

Hannah AshworthTo get ahead.

Carol BeddoesThere is no ahead, Hannah. There's the standard. I want to talk to you about that in week five. Beth, very consistent, and I don't need a full review of Friday's fulfilment session in the margin, lovely as it sounds. Amira.

Amira RahmanMrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesYour log is a series of jokes.

Amira RahmanThey're accurate jokes.

Carol Beddoes"Day six: four went in. Four and I are now in a committed relationship." Is that accurate?

Amira RahmanEmotionally.

Carol BeddoesIs four in now?

Amira RahmanYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesThen I'll allow it. Chloe.

Chloe DunmoreYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesWorn every working day. Three by day eight. Four by day twelve. Mr Whitfield confirms it's been in every time he's checked. Very good progress.

Chloe DunmoreHe's been very thorough.

Carol BeddoesHas he.

Chloe DunmoreYes, Mrs Beddoes. Every morning when I get in. And after lunch. And sometimes just... when he walks past. He calls me in and shuts the door and I have to...

[Pause]

Carol BeddoesYou've gone very pink, Chloe.

Chloe DunmoreOnce it was in the lift.

[Laughter, unattributed]

Amira RahmanWhich lift?

Chloe DunmoreThe glass one.

Carol BeddoesAmira. Chloe, that's exactly what I asked him to do. It's his job. Thank him next time.

Chloe DunmoreI do. Every time.

Carol BeddoesWhat have you got in now?

Chloe DunmoreFour.

[Footsteps]

Carol BeddoesChloe, that's a two.

[Pause]

Carol BeddoesMr Whitfield is very thorough about whether it's in. He doesn't check which one. And every entry in this log is in the same blue pen. Ten entries over ten working days, and the pen never runs low, and the handwriting never changes, and not one of them is smudged. When did you write it?

[Pause]

Chloe DunmoreLast night.

Carol BeddoesSay it so the others can hear it.

Chloe DunmoreI wrote it last night.

Carol BeddoesThank you. Trainer out. Up. Come here.

[Movement]

Carol BeddoesYou've been told what the communication score is for. You were told on day one. Nobody in this firm can look after you if you won't tell them the truth. Not me, not your line manager, not whichever man eventually puts a collar on you. Over the end of the bench, please. Hands flat on the floor.

Chloe DunmoreYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesTwelve. You'll count them. Everyone else stays in Bara and listens.

[Sound of hand on skin]

Chloe DunmoreOne.

[Sound of hand on skin]

Chloe DunmoreTwo.

[Sound of hand on skin. Repeated.]

Chloe DunmoreNine. Ten.

Carol BeddoesYou're rushing.

Chloe DunmoreSorry. Ten.

[Sound of hand on skin]

Chloe DunmoreEleven.

[Sound of hand on skin]

Chloe DunmoreTwelve. Thank you, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesStay there. Why did you do it?

Chloe DunmoreI don't know.

Carol BeddoesYes you do.

Chloe DunmoreBecause three hurt, at my desk, all day, and two didn't. So I kept two in. And then I'd written three once, and then it felt too late to write the truth, so I just kept writing the next number, and then...

Carol BeddoesAnd then it was Wednesday.

Chloe DunmoreYes.

Carol BeddoesRight. That's the truth. That's what I needed. New log. Starting tomorrow, and you start at two because that's where you are. If something hurts, you write it down. If you go down a size, you write it down, and you ring me. Not text. Ring.

Chloe DunmoreYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesTwo back in. Bara with the others. You can sit down properly on Friday.

[Movement]

Carol BeddoesWait. Chloe, stay up on your knees a moment. Look at me.

Chloe DunmoreYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesYou've flushed right down to your chest. And I can see from here what that did to you.

[Pause]

Chloe DunmoreSorry.

Carol BeddoesDon't be sorry. It's useful. You respond well to correction. That's going in your file.

Chloe DunmoreOh god.

Amira RahmanIf I lie on my log next week, do I get that?

Carol BeddoesYou'd get Mr Hargreaves and his hairbrush, and you would not enjoy it nearly as much.

[Laughter, unattributed]

Amira RahmanNoted, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesBara, Chloe.

Session 5: Supervised

Training Room 3B. Wednesday 2 September 2026, 14:00

Carol BeddoesBefore we start. Amira, turn round.

[Pause]

Carol BeddoesThat is a very red bottom.

Amira RahmanYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesIt's two o'clock.

Amira RahmanIt happened at eleven.

Carol BeddoesAnd it's still that colour. Who?

Amira RahmanMr Hargreaves.

Carol BeddoesWhat for?

Amira RahmanThe client asked if the deadline was realistic and I said "define realistic."

[Laughter, unattributed]

Amira RahmanIn the meeting. Out loud. With my face.

Carol BeddoesAnd was it realistic?

Amira RahmanNo, Mrs Beddoes. That was rather my point.

Carol BeddoesThen it was a good point and a terrible sentence. Hairbrush?

Amira RahmanHairbrush. He keeps it in his desk drawer. Next to the staples.

Carol BeddoesHe's had it since I was a graduate. I did tell you you wouldn't enjoy it. Did you thank him?

Amira RahmanYes, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesDid you mean it?

Amira RahmanBy about the eighth one.

Carol BeddoesGood. You'll be sitting in Nadu for most of this session, and you'll be doing it on that, and you won't fidget. Consider it continuing development. Numbers. Honestly.

Hannah AshworthFour.

Beth CareyFour.

Amira RahmanFour.

Chloe DunmoreThree. I went back down to two on Thursday. I rang you.

Carol BeddoesYou did. It's in your file. Three's a good number, Chloe, and it's a true one.

[Door opens]

Richard PriceAfternoon, Carol.

Carol BeddoesMr Price. Mr Okafor. Thank you for coming.

Tunde OkaforSorry we're late, the Brennan call overran.

Richard PriceBrennan calls always overrun.

Carol BeddoesLadies, Mr Price and Mr Okafor will be your assessors next week. Today isn't scored. Today is so that next week isn't the first time. Hannah and Beth first, Amira and Chloe observe from Nadu, trainers in. Hannah, Mr Price. Beth, Mr Okafor.

Amira RahmanTrainers in, in Nadu?

Carol BeddoesIt's good for you.

[Movement. Soft sound, unattributed.]

Amira RahmanOh. Right. Yes. It is.

Tunde OkaforHello, Beth. I'm told this is your favourite.

Tunde OkaforI'm going to put my hand on your back so you know where I am.

Beth CareyYes, sir.

Richard PriceMiss Ashworth. Top of Module 5, I'm told.

Hannah AshworthYes, sir.

Richard PriceI know you don't. That's why we won't.

[Pump bottle]

Tunde OkaforOut, Beth.

[Beth Carey: long exhalation]

Tunde OkaforGood girl. Tell me.

Beth CareyIt's... warm. Much warmer than the trainer.

Carol BeddoesGood. That's a real answer.

Richard PriceBreathe out, Hannah.

Hannah AshworthI am.

Richard PriceYou're pushing. Pushing isn't breathing out. You're trying to do it for me. Stop helping.

Hannah AshworthI'm not...

Richard PriceStop helping, Hannah.

[Pause. Hannah Ashworth: exhalation]

Hannah AshworthOh god.

Richard PriceBetter.

Hannah AshworthOh my god. Sorry.

Carol BeddoesCommunication, Hannah.

Hannah AshworthI'm communicating!

[Laughter, including assessors]

Carol BeddoesObservers. Chloe, what do you see?

Chloe DunmoreHannah keeps pushing back. With her hips. To meet him.

Carol BeddoesMeaning?

Chloe DunmoreShe's still trying to set the pace.

Hannah AshworthI'm not...

Richard PriceQuiet.

[Movement. Bench creaks.]

Richard PriceHands.

Carol BeddoesFor the tape, Mr Price has taken hold of Hannah's wrists at the small of her back. Hannah, you have no pace now. How is that?

Hannah Ashworth[inaudible]

Carol BeddoesLouder.

Hannah AshworthIt's worse. It's so much worse. It's so good.

Carol BeddoesThank you. Good note, Chloe.

Chloe DunmoreThank you, Mrs Beddoes.

Carol BeddoesAmira, what's Beth's face doing?

Amira RahmanNothing. It's really peaceful. It's actually a bit annoying.

Carol BeddoesBeth?

Beth Carey[laughs] Sorry.

Tunde OkaforDon't be.

Transcript continues. Amira Rahman and Chloe Dunmore, supervised, 00:21:00 to 00:48:00, omitted from this excerpt.

Carol BeddoesChloe. How did that feel?

Chloe DunmoreBig. Bigger than three. I asked him to stop twice.

Carol BeddoesAnd did he?

Chloe DunmoreYes. And then I asked him to carry on.

Carol BeddoesThat's a five for communication. First one you've had from me.

[Pause]

Chloe DunmoreThank you, Mrs Beddoes.

Chloe DunmoreMrs Beddoes, you said on the first day that my body forgets.

Carol BeddoesI did.

Chloe DunmoreSo I was thinking, just to be safe, I could keep wearing it at work. For a bit. So I don't slip back. And Mr Whitfield could keep checking, just so someone's...

Carol BeddoesChloe.

Chloe DunmoreJust as a precaution.

[Pause]

Amira RahmanShe's gone pink again.

Carol BeddoesI'll think about it. Is it still recording? How do you stop this thing?
